Be a Detail Detective:
A Descriptive Writing Workshop
Vivid description adds clarity and brings all kinds of writing to life. Using Twenty-One Elephants and Still Standing and other mentor texts, both narrative and informative, we'll look at the huge difference it makes when we use detail and description in our writing.
Then we'll break into pairs and use our detective powers to examine various objects and describe them using specific, sensory-based words and comparisons. If these items were lost, could we describe them well enough that someone else would be able to identify them? We'll find out! This presentation is best for single classrooms grades 1 and up, and it supports Common Core Reading Literature Standard 4. |
