Literacy for Life:
Ideas and Resources for Raising Readers and Writers
In this session for parents and caregivers, we'll discuss why reading and writing are superpowers and how we can encourage a love of literacy outside the classroom. The benefits of reading at every stage of a child’s development are well documented; time spent reading is linked to higher academic performance across the board, better jobs, stronger social-emotional skills, and even longer lives. (Wow!) What makes reading so powerful? How does reading improve writing, and vice versa? And how can we, as parents and caregivers, spark reading and writing at home? This presentations offers tips, tricks, and resources for raising readers and writers. Participants will receive handouts with additional resources and should bring questions and/or ideas for a lively discussion of literacy for learning—and life!
This presentation is appropriate for schools, libraries, and literacy organizations and can be offered during the school day, after school, or in the evening. |
